LESSONS FROM ELDERS

LESSONS FROM ELDERS :

PROF.(DR.) GANGADHAR SAHOO
DEAN
IMS & SUM HOSPITAL
BHUBANESWAR, ODISHA
Pro. V.C. , SOADU, Bhubaneswar
President, ISOPARB

“The Greatest lesson I have learned in life is that I still have a lot to learn”

A few days after I occupied the hot seat of Dean, IMS & SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, I was surprised to meet a wonderful person, senior to me by 5 years & holding an administrative post who told me two stories from his experience.  The first story was very symbolic. He started the story of his professor who was very disciplined and strict .Throughout the year, may it be summer or winter, rainy or spring he is always with his suit and tie. He always asked his PG students (gents) to come with clean white coat and tie. Anybody who by mistake comes without a tie or white coat was virtually thrown out the class.

After completing this he looked at me and told, “ Dr. Sahoo! Today you remind me of my great teacher. Truly one’s dress reflects one’s personality. You are the Dean and look like a Dean with your coat and tie.  Keep it up”. I said, “Thank you sir! It is really a great complement for me”. It reminded me of my teacher Prof. Sukumar Mitra a legendary figure in the field of Obst. & Gynaecology. He was always dressed with suit & tie irrespective of the seasons, time of the day, in or off the campus & nature of the duty (routine or emergency).   His dress -up added to his personality as a teacher, surgeon & a clinician. From him I learnt to dress up properly always with a coat & tie. Whenever I was not without a tie or a coat my students ask me “Sir! Are you ok ?” This is similar to the comment of President Musaraf of Pakistan on MS Dhoni, with long hairs the captain of winning Indian team, “Dhoni ! You look very special with your hair style. It adds to your personality and captaincy. Please do not change it.”

The second story was again a fact of his own experience. The story goes like this. It was his first day of assuming the charge of the medical superintendent of a prestigious medical Institute  in Delhi and that too it was the first rare instance of occupying the hot seat by a person who had passed from the same medical college.

He started the ward round. Any where he went he was greeted with bouquets, smiles, handshakes and good wishes.

He went to neurosurgery ward. Everybody greeted him except one staff sister who even did not bother to stand up when the medical superintendent passed by her side.

After the round was over, the additional superintendent came and told the superintendent, “Sir! Did you mark that sister in the neurosurgery ward? She was so adamant and arrogant that she even did not care to leave her seat. Her past record was like that. She never pays any respect to any body. You should ask for an explanation and give her exemplary punishment.”

The superintendent replied that he did not think so. “Why she will show disrespect to me? She does not know that I have joined as superintendent and am giving round. There might be other possibilities also.
1. She might have been absorbed in her professional work so much that she did not pay attention to anybody passing by her. It is really a commendable job for which she should be rather rewarded not punished.

2. The Second possibility is that I am new to her. I should have introduced myself to her and then asked her to accompany me in the round. So it is my fault.

3. The third possibility is that she might be having some spinal problem for which she was incapacitated and was not in a position to stand up.

4. The fourth possibility is that she might be from a society where this is not in their culture to stand up and wish.

So there is nothing to be offended or humiliated. Rather I stand by my first possibility and I am definitely going to reward her “.

Take Home Message :

These two stories gave sufficient space to learn. In the first story it tells me in whatever situation you are please stick to your principle and discipline. Your dress is a symbol of your personality. So always be smartly dressed and give a positive message to others.

In the second story, “Do not look to the darker side of a person. Be positive minded”. Circumstances are the best teacher. As one faces different circumstances one gets opportunity to learn and thus gets experience.

“Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right; because they have more experience in making mistakes.”

Lessons from elders by Prof. Dr. Gangadhar Sahoo Sir is really amazing. It reminds me about two quotations. The first one is "no matter how you feel, get up, dress up and never give up." Wearing good attires, makes us feel good and it increases our self confidence and it also creates a good impression in someone's mind. The second quotation is “Your mind is a magnet. If you think blessings, you attract blessings. And if you think of problems, you attract problems. Always cultivate good thoughts and always remain positive.” So we should always be optimistic and positive and we should learn to neglect the negative side of anything. The two stories by sir are the real examples of the two quotations. Thank you sir for sharing your experiences.

Story " Lesson from elders" by Dr. Gangadhar Sahoo is a nice story to tell how a person can act differently in different situations. Also the positive thinking about a person keeps our mind peaceful, which is quite necessary for us.

Different occupations demand different ways of dressing. Gandhiji in his loin cloth was never looking beggarly. That's why well-dressed Churchill's derogatory remark of "Half-naked Fakir" could elicit the best out of this Man: "His Majesty has enough for both of us!" At the end of the day, 'who' wears the dress is important than 'what' he wears. Yes, we must not prejudge a person from an event/instance. As usual, Prof Gangadhar Sir is so generous in giving us food for thought.

The two stories are very interesting. In the first story we get the message how important it is to be well dressed and presentable. Though they say that we shouldn't judge anyone from their appearance or the dress they wear, but people do judge people on this basis. Personally,I beleive that wearing good clothes boosts up our self-confidence. So, we should dress up for ourselves and not for others. In the second story the moral is to ignore the darker side of a person, to which I totally agree. Only if we learn to ignore the negative people or negative thoughts or manners, we can be happy. Again I must thank Sir for sharing two wonderful incedents of his life in form of interesting stories with strong lessons to be learnt.

So true sir... Never see the dark side of people, when we see the positive side we can spread positivity everywhere... And about principle and Discipline... These two are like 2 legs which will help us to move on the road called life. Present generation not caring for the dressing sense they feel dressing should be as per comfort not the situation and this is the root cause of clumsiness seen in the dressing sense of the present generation. May God help us but again a good teacher can help us sail through the difficult times.... we need many more teachers like sir.

When respect is demanded its sure to lose . And if you deserve respect give respect .Respect can't be a demand . Its a behaviour to practice, to learn and to make others feel the value of it. This article ,A Lesson From Elders by our dean Sir Dr. Prof Gangadhar Sahoo Sir revolves around the interpretation of a value based broad minded person who have really reached the height of true success. To have real growth in life ,one have to ignore petty things. Diverting the thought process in a optimistic line ,make us energetic, productive and socially adorbale. People always remember how we make them feel.If some1 else is poor in culture ,behaviour why to suffer our own mental state. Rather take some good gesture, positive remark and accepting attitude to change them through reformation. Hope society learns, ideals.. Lord Buddha when situation like giving -accepting comes may it be good or bad. When Lord Buddha is preaching, everyone is not accepting all ,some gives good feedback ,some negatives to his teaching or preaching ,His disciple asked are you not angry when some1 behave this way ,He replied humbly" i have'nt accepted". So when some1 is disrespectful to you ,why to accept . You didnt expect people to respect unanimously. .you are generous, kind ,heartful ,to judge in a positive way putting you empathetically to many possible fact. To pospure, to be in peace ,to be healthy the great motto in life avoid Unnecessary enemity ,misunderstandings unless otherwise proven fatal to take concern . Its not a story of lesson from elders ....the repeating truth of life ...Experience is the secrete of elders care, attitude, guide to direct us rightly that may not be magical or forecasting astrology but above that to hold us in worst days of our adventure journey. Thank you Sir sharing your beautiful moral reasoning to emphasize elder's life experinces. May you fill others boredoom with much value to society with your magical spell of literary art
